Associate Investigator
The main objective of our group is to investigate genetic and epigenetic factors related to cardiac remodeling in hypertensive patients and in people with spinal cord injuries. To this end, we use several molecular biology tools. Keywords: Obesity, hypothalamus, energy expenditure, brown adipose tissue, thermogenesis, inflammation

The Laboratory of Cardiovascular Biology at FCM-UNICAMP has as main objective to investigate the genetic and epigenetic factors of cardiovascular alterations, as well as cardiac remodeling in hypertensive patients and in people with spinal cord injury. To this end, we use several molecular biology tools.

MAIN DISCOVERIES

  • Several miRNAs are associated with accelerated atherosclerosis in patients with chronic spinal cord injury and adapted sports activity seems to interfere with the serum expression of these miRNAs;
  • There are large differences in the clinical and genotypic determinants of cardiac remodeling between men and women with systemic arterial hypertension;
  • Genetic variants of NADPH oxidase and toll-like receptors are associated with cardiac remodeling in hypertensive patients;
  • Hypertensive patients with carotid plaques have increased expression of miR-145-5p and miR-let7c, suggesting a potential role for these miRNAs as a biomarker for subclinical atherosclerosis in hypertensive individuals.
